Builder gel nails — a stronger, healthier alternative.
Builder gel (also known as BIAB) is one of the most-requested services at Adiva Nails — a lightweight, long-lasting gel system that protects and strengthens your natural nails, or extends them without the weight of acrylic.
Inside Burwood One Shopping Centre · Easy from Burwood East, Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Box Hill and the wider Melbourne east.
Lightweight
Thinner and more flexible than acrylic — feels like your own nails, not like an enhancement.
Strengthening
A structured layer at the stress point of the nail, so your natural growth isn't lost to chips or breakage.
Soak-off
Removed cleanly without aggressive filing — a gentler system for the long term.
Trusted by clients across Melbourne's east.
Over 1,012 reviews across Google, Fresha & Facebook.
“Always excellent and friendly service by the lovely ladies at Adiva. Have had manis and pedis with SNS, Shellac, BIAB on natural nails and with extensions, lash extensions, lash lift & tint, & waxing. Great choices of nail colours, my lashes look great every time!”
“Been getting Gel X here for months. Always perfect, always friendly. Best nail salon in the east.”
“Love the builder gel extensions — strong but still look natural. The team really knows what they are doing.”
Builder gel — also known as BIAB.
A protective overlay — or a lightweight extension system.
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle — a thicker, self-levelling soak-off gel that can be applied directly to the natural nail as a strengthening overlay, or used with tips and forms to create lightweight extensions. Unlike regular gel polish, it has the structural strength to protect thin, weak, or peeling nails while still feeling natural.
As an overlay, BIAB doesn't make your nails grow faster — but it protects them from chips, breaks and bending, so the natural growth your nails are already producing isn't constantly lost to breakage. Most regular clients see longer, healthier-looking nails within a few months.
The trick is the apex — the highest point of the nail's profile, sitting roughly a third of the way down from the cuticle. A skilled application places a thicker bead of builder gel exactly there, where everyday bending forces concentrate. That single structural detail is what separates a builder gel set that holds for five weeks from one that lifts in two.
At Adiva in Burwood East, BIAB overlays start from $60 and last three to five weeks. Clients book in from across Melbourne's east — Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Box Hill, Vermont and Doncaster East — most as recurring three-weekly regulars.
And if you want added length straight away, builder gel extensions give you a lighter, more flexible alternative to acrylic.
“ Protect your natural nails, or extend them — either way, it feels like your own.
- Builder gel — sculpted thicker at the apex
- Natural nail — buffed and dehydrated

Builder gel is a great fit if…
- Thin, peeling or brittle nails — that struggle to grow on their own
- A natural-looking finish — without the thickness of acrylic
- A clean soak-off system — removable without heavy filing
- Long-lasting colour — without weekly polish refreshes
- Added length without acrylic — lighter, more flexible extensions
- Stepping away from acrylic — and looking for something gentler
Builder gel overlays work best on short and medium-length nails. For added length, ask about our builder gel extensions or Gel X tips.
How builder gel is applied at Adiva
A careful five-step ritual — about 60 minutes for a full set, 45 for an infill.
- 01
Nail prep
Cuticles tidied, the nail surface gently buffed to remove shine, and a dehydrator applied so the gel bonds cleanly.
- 02
Bonding base
A thin bonding base coat is brushed on and cured under our LED lamp.
- 03
Builder layer
Builder gel is applied as a structured layer, shaped to add strength at the stress point of each nail, then cured.
- 04
Colour or finish
Your choice of gel colour, French, ombre, chrome or freehand nail art is layered over the builder gel.
- 05
Top coat & oil
A glossy or matte top coat is cured, then warm cuticle oil is massaged in to finish.

To get the most from your set
Cuticle oil daily
Keeps the overlay flexible and your natural nails hydrated underneath.
Gloves for cleaning
Household chemicals are the fastest way to dull and weaken any gel system.
Never use nails as tools
No peeling labels, scratching stickers, or opening cans.
Don't pick or peel
If a corner lifts, book in for a quick fix rather than pulling at it.
Infill at 3–5 weeks
Staying on top of maintenance protects both the overlay and the nail underneath.
Questions, answered
Yes — BIAB stands for "Builder In A Bottle", which is a branded version of builder gel by The GelBottle Inc. At Adiva we use professional-grade builder gel systems that work the same way. You may hear it called BIAB, builder gel, or bottle gel — they all refer to the same type of service.
When applied and removed correctly by a trained nail technician, builder gel is one of the gentlest enhancement systems available. The most common cause of damage is picking or peeling — always come back for a proper soak-off rather than removing it yourself.
Yes — builder gel works beautifully on short nails and is one of the best options for clients trying to grow their nails out from short or damaged. As an overlay, it protects your natural nails while they grow underneath.
SNS is a powder dip system that builds up a harder, slightly thicker layer. Builder gel (BIAB) is a brush-on gel that's lighter and more flexible, with a more natural feel. Both last around three to five weeks. SNS tends to be stronger; builder gel tends to feel more like your own nails.
Regular gel polish (including Shellac) is purely a colour coating with no structural strength. Builder gel has structural properties that strengthen and protect the natural nail — it's a true overlay, not just polish.
Absolutely. Colour, French, ombre, glitter, chrome, and freehand nail art all work beautifully over builder gel.
Every three to five weeks is the professional standard, depending on how fast your nails grow. Going longer increases the risk of lifting and breakage at the regrowth area.
An overlay is applied directly on your natural nails to add strength and protection — no extra length. Extensions use builder gel with tips or forms to add length. Both use the same gel system, just applied differently depending on what you want.
